Clare Callahan, Director

 

Chair, Classical Guitar Studies at CCM, a program she founded in 1972.  A student of Bibobi (England), Papas (US), and Segovia (Spain), she was a scholarship winner to Musica en Compostela.  She has served on the Board of Directors of the Guitar Foundation of America, the American String Teachers Association Guitar Division, and the Solo Recitalists Panel of the National Endowment for the Arts.  She is a clinician for ASTA, MENC, MTNA, and the Suzuki Association.  An Area Chamber Artist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and teacher whose students have won major awards, Prof. Callahan is a frequent competition juror, guest lecturer and teacher.  In 2005, she received the Ernest Glover Award for Outstanding Teaching at CCM.


   

Rodney Stucky, Co-Director

 

Rodney Stucky, Co-Director
Faculty, CCM Early Music Lab and Preparatory Department.  Previous faculty Appointments at University of South Carolina, St. Louis Conservatory of Music, University of Kentucky.  Performer also on lute, archlute, vihuela, and baroque guitar.  Member, Mano y Arco (baroque improv and continuo ensemble), Apollo’s Cabinet, and the Stucky-Henderson Duo (guitar and voice).  Concerts with the Vocal Arts Ensemble, Dayton Bach Society, and Hickory Hill Chamber Players.  Performances at the Ecole Normale de Musique and the Conservatoire Superieur in Paris, France, as well as throughout the U.S.  Broadcasts NPR, recording for Vienna Modern Masters and Fleur de Son Classics.  Voice/guitar arrangements published by Southern Music and “Guitar for the Young” published by Les Productions d’OZ.


   

Renato Butturi

 

Head of the Classical Guitar Department at the University of Evansville (Indiana). Performer also on lute, baroque guitar & flute. Coach for jazz, brass & early music ensembles. Lecturer in music history and world culture. Adjudicator & coach. Freelance solo and ensemble musician.

 

Carlos Perez

 

Chilean virtuoso guitarist.  International prize winner.  Alirio Diaz Competition, Rene Bartoli Competition, Printemps de Guitare, Forum Gitarre, Fundacion Guerrero. Recitals in more than thirty countries in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania.  Concerto performances in France, Belgium, Spain, USA, Portugal, Russia, China. Performer/teacher in Volos, Vienna, Esztergom, Bratislava, Mikulov, Caracas, Cuernavaca, and Martinique.  Recordings with Opera Tres in Spain.  Publications: Lemoine, Productions D’Oz, Greensland-Verlag.  Major teacher: Ernesto Quezada, University of Chile.  First Prize, Joaquin Rodrigo Competition,  June 2006.

   

Stanley Yates

 

Chair, Classical Guitar Department at Austin Peay State University.  Award-winning recitalist in Europe and America (Dame Myra Hess Award, London, 1986; GFA Competition, 1990).  Guest lecturer and teacher at festivals, universities, colleges throughout England, Canada, and USA.  Editor of numerous publications for Mel Bay (the Stanley Yates Series) including “Guitar Music of Stepan Rak,” “ Isaac Albeniz Pieces for Guitar,” “ Bach Six Cello Suites,” "Method for Guitar," and several collections of his own compositions. Recordings:  San Francisco, Nashville, St. Louis (Mel Bay).

   

Karl Wohlwend

 

Faculty, Otterbein College.  A composer and arranger, Karl is featured in New Music festivals.  Active as soloist and chamber musician.  Performances broadcast on NPR. Versatile session player.  Member of several mainstream ensemble groups (including a Celtic Band) in Columbus, OH area.  Has longstanding private studio.  Degrees from University of South Carolina and the Cleveland Institute of Music.  Major teachers:  Christopher Berg, John Holmquist, Julian Gray. 

   

Jeffery Van

 

Faculty, University of Minnesota. Established recitalist whose appearances include Carnegie Hall and Wigmore Hall (London), plus many NPR broadcasts and recordings. Has premiered over fifty works for guitar, including four concertos. Has held appointments with Affiliate Artists and Young Audiences. Active composer/arranger with Walton, Plymouth, Boosey and Hawkes, Foster and Hal Leonard publications. Respected teacher and adjudicator whose students have won major awards and forged successful careers. Member of the Hill House Chamber Ensemble in St. Paul and the Van/Dixon Guitar Duo.

Faculty, Indiana/Purdue Universities, Indianapolis (IUPUI). Music and Arts Technology Department. Performer, teacher, Flamenco specialist. Member: Flamenco de Indianopolis. Given Innovative Artist Award from Indiana University in 2008. Founding member and President of the Indiana Society of the of the Classical Guitar. Performances throughout the midwest and southwest. Teaching positions in Arizona, Indiana, Chicago. Undergraduate work at DePaul University, master’s degree from Arizona State University with Frank Koonce. Flamenco studies with Chris Burton Jacomé and Diego Alonso Aste.

 

Amy Brucksch

 

Soloist, teacher, and chamber musician.  Member, Keowee Chamber Musicians (North Carolina), Duo Ami (flute/guitar), Strings of Choice.  Previously classical guitar faculty, University of Toledo (OH).  Appearances with Toledo Symphony and Toledo Opera.  Ohio Arts Council Touring Artist.  Performances at Oberlin College, Miami University, National Flute Association, with residencies at schools, colleges, arts organizations in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and the Carolinas.  Featured artist, Greenville Symphony Spotlight Series, Lake Eden Arts Festival, Haywood County Artists Series.  BM Classical Guitar from CCM, MM Music Education from Bowling Green State University.  Masterclasses with Oscar Ghiglia, Robert Guthrie, Pepe Romero, David Russell.  Recording for Masterworks Chorale.

 

Kevin Ebert

 

Faculty in Classical Guitar at Xavier University and University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music Preparatory Department. Also teacher of special topics in Music History at Xavier. Soloist, chamber musician. BA degree from Hamline University (MN) with Jeffrey Van and MM from College-Conservatory of Music (UC) with Clare Callahan, where he held a graduate assistantship. Masterclasses with Paul O’Dette, Jason Vieaux, Eduardo Fernandez and Oscar Ghiglia, among others. Director/Manager of Sundin Hall (HamlineUniversity). Served in the Peace Corps in Kirov, Russia for two years.

Michael Fogler

Faculty, Georgetown College, KY. Performer, teacher, arranger, chamber musician. Member: Lexington Guitar Trio, Elliott/Fogler flute/guitar duo, Kennedy/Fogler vloice/guitar duo (featured concert at the GFA Festival). Appearances with Lexington Chamber Chorale, Paragon Musical Theater. Professionally active in the Lexington KY area for 30 years. Former Director of the Kentucky Guitar Society and faculty member at the University of Kentucky. Studies with David Barison (University of North Carolina at Greensboro), Jesus Silva (North Carolina School of the Arts) and Bruce Holzman (Florida State University, graduate assistant during master’s degree work).

Richard Goering

Soloist, chamber musician, teacher. Co-Founder of the Classical Guitar Workshop in 1983 with Clare Callahan, Judith Handler, and Robert Mercer. Former faculty at the University of Louisville and the CCM Preparatory Department. BM degree from CCM with Clare Callahan, MM degree from Yale University with Benjamin Verdery and Robert Guthrie (winner of the Harriet Fox Memorial Prize and a Charles H. Ditson Scholarship). Performer’s Certificate from the Conservatorio Oscar Espla in Alicante, Spain with José Tomás. International concerts in Spain and England. Concerto performances with the Cordoba Symphonic Orchestra (Spain), the Rome Festival Orchestra (Italy), and the Huntington Chamber Orchestra in West Virginia. Guitarist with the Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra (Carmen DeLeone, conductor) and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (Michael Gielen, conductor, for Mahler’s Symphony VII). Active performer for the Ohio Arts Council, Carnegie Arts Center (Covington, KY), WGUC, local/regional events.

Julie Goldberg
Faculty, North Park University, VanderCook College of Music, Chicago.  Degrees From Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University and CCM.  First guitarist to receive DMA degree from Northwestern University.  Studies with Clare Callahan, Robert Guthrie, Pamela Kimmel, Anne Waller.  Masterclasses with Oscar Ghiglia, Pepe Romero, Sharon Isbin, Christopher Berg, and the Music Group of London.  Winner, Presser Music Scholar Award, Farwell Arts Auditions, Three Arts Award. Named 2002 Guitarist of the Year by “Classical Guitar Alive” (NPR).  Active as a recitalist and chamber music player (“Guitar Plus” in Chicago).  Founder/Director, Chicago Community Classical Guitar Orchestra.  Recording:  “Dulce” (Sweet Pickle label). 
 

John Hedger

  Composer, guitarist, lutenist. Faculty, Berea College (KY), Centre College (KY), Transylvania University (KY). Performer/teacher of guitar and lute. Active with Musick’s Company (early music) in Lexington. BA in Music and MM in Composition from the University of Kentucky. Private lessons and masterclasses with Paul O’Dette, Nigel North, Elliot Fisk, David Russell, Eduardo Fernandez, Robert Reynierson, David Kelsey, and Michael Fogler. Composition sessions with Joseph Baber, Stephen Dodgson, and Reginald Smith Brindle. Winner, “Guitar 87” Toronto New Music Competition for “Variations and Fantasia on Theme by John Dowland.” Winner, Kentucky Oswald Composition Competition in 1982 for “Four Shakespeare Songs” for voice and guitar. Guitar faculty at the Kentucky Governor’s School of the Arts each summer since 2006.

Christopher Hubbard


Faculty, Sinclair Community College (Dayton, OH), Cincinnati Christian University, in addition to extensive private teaching. Previous faculty at Antioch College, University of Rio Grande, and Music at Maple Mount Summer Institute for Young Musicians (Owensboro, KY).  Degrees from Florida State University (with Bruce Holzman) and Marshall University (with Leo Welch).  Recipient of Shirley Turley Performance Award at Marshall University.  Active solo and chamber musician.  Arrangements for guitar ensemble and voice/guitar.  Past President and Board Member, Greater Cincinnati Guitar Society. 


Kevin Mulhall


Soloist, teacher, chamber musician, and arranger.   Faculty, Sinclair Community College and Antioch University.  Degrees from State University of New York at Purchase (Conservatory), and Wright State University.  Primary teachers: David Starobin and Minoru.  Regular appearances with Nagasaki (Japan) Broadcasting radio and television networks.  Active performer/arranger in the Dayton, Ohio area.


Larry Snitzler 


Performer, lecturer, composer.  Faculty, George Mason University, Fairfax, VA. Founding member, Washington Guitar Quintet.  NPR host, performer, producer (Guitar Notebook, !SEGOVIA!).  Music Advisory Panel, National Endowment of the Arts.  Music consultant, National Gallery Art.  Lecturer, Smithsonian Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Contributor to “ Guitar Review.” Concerts in US, Europe, Latin America.  Studies with Andres Segovia, Oscar Ghiglia, Presti-Lagoya Duo,  Nadia Boulanger (Paris).  Recordings: Blue Lula, Concord Concerto Label. 

 

Sarah Wilke

  Teacher/performer/ensemble coach. BM, Northern Kentucky University with Robert Mercer. Currently Director of Music at Seton Elementary School and Cathedral School of Holy Rosary in Rochester, NY. Also has active private studio. Former Director of the Preparatory Department Guitar Program at Northern Kentucky University. Founded the “Prep Guitar Ensemble” and coached them in community concerts. Taught music for six years at St. Peter Claver Latin School for Boys in Over-the- Rhine area of Cincinnati.
 

Christopher Wilke

  DMA Candidate in Early Music, Eastman School of Music. Study with Paul O’Dette. Lute and theorbo recitals in New York State, Germany, and the Midwest. Soloist Lute Society of America National Meeting, 2020. Former faculty, Northern Kentucky University, Xavier University (OH), Marshall University (WV). Classical Guitar degrees from Mount Saint Joseph College and CCM. Masterclasses with Oscar Ghiglia, LAGQ, Antigoni Goni, Martha Masters, among others. Recipient Oscar Ghiglia Scholarship, Composer’s Guild Awards. Compositions performed by CCM’s Contemporary Music Festival 2002, the Clermont Orchestra (OH), the Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra, Northern Kentucky University. Served as Choir Director, Old St. Mary’s Church (Cincinnati).
 

Andrew Winner

 

Faculty, Northern Kentucky University. Formerly taught at Western Kentucky University, Trevacca Nazarene University (Nashville). Established classical guitar programs at both the Guitar Academy in Bowling Green, Kentucky and the Renaissance Center in Dickson, Tennessee. Has a BM from Western Kentucky University where he studied with David Kelsey, and an MM from Austin Peay State University where he studied with Stanley Yates. Active as solo and chamber musician. Solo CD titled “An Italian Serenade.”
