MONICA MUGAN received her Bachelor’s degree in Music (guitar performance) and English Literature from the University of Maine, where she studied with Keith Crook.  In l992, she won the Downeast Classical Guitar Competition held at the university.  She then pursued a Master of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance on full scholarship at the College-Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Clare Callahan.  She also served as Prof. Callahan’s graduate assistant teaching sightreading, technique classes, and coaching ensembles.  Ms. Mugan performed in several guest-artist masterclasses including those given by Sharon Isbin, David Leisner, and Visiting Artist Oscar Ghiglia.  She is currently active as a soloist and chamber musician in the Princeton, New Jersey area where she has premiered several works as part of the Princeton Composer’s Ensemble.  Her duo Trollstilt, with fiddler/composer Dan Trueman, has performed widely at both folk and new music festivals including Bang-on-a-Can Marathon at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Chamber Music America National Conference in New York, and the Al Norsk Folkemusikkveka in Norway (through a grant from Arts International).  Upcoming performances will include a special invited concert at Amerikappleik in Minnesota, sponsored by the Hardinger Fiddle Association of America, and a performance at Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening Space in upstate New York.  Trollstilt released their first CD in 2000 on Azalea City Recordings.  In l998, Ms. Mugan premiered and recorded Princeton composer Paul Lansky’s six-movement Semi-Suite for steel-stringed guitar.

Ms. Mugan has a private teaching studio in Princeton where she lives with her husband, Princeton composer/professor Dan Trueman and their little daughter, Molly Clare.  We are delighted to welcome her back to CCM and the Classical Guitar Workshop, this time as guest soloist.
